It was one fine Saturday afternoon when I found myself walking towards the Pinnacle Hotel in Davao City. There was a forum during that particular day which was hosted by Sun Life Financial and if you know me personally, you would fully understand why I was particularly interested in such a forum.
If you don't, allow me to give you a brief background as to why Sun Life Financial is a topic that I truly fancy...
Back when my husband and I were still boyfriend and girlfriend, we were approached by a schoolmate of mine who happened to be one of Sun Life's financial advisers. He asked us through a personal message on Facebook if we had time to spare one weeknight as he would like to explain a bit of financial planning and its importance. Mark and I said YES and we had a thorough discussion one Thursday night about the products of Sun Life Financial and what would suit our needs. A few days later, our policies were delivered and we finally had another egg added to our growing financial investments basket. This was in the latter part of 2014.
It's been almost four years and I have to say that I am very happy with our decision back then to get an investment with Sun Life Financial. Our financial adviser, Nigel, is still here with us and is very happy with his job as a Financial Adviser in Sun Life. Which kind of made me think... what's it like to be a Financial Adviser? Just a little disclaimer: I'm not really thinking of shifting jobs at the moment but I'm just really curious as to what Financial Advisers do and how they are being compensated in doing such arduous tasks.
And alas, the answer to such questions were answered during the forum which was held last March 17, 2018 at the Pinnacle Hotel.
Financial Advisers, from the job title itself, help in giving financial advice to busy individuals who have money to spare and give them suggestions on where to place their money and at the same time, explain to these people the benefits of investing their money. Although the word "insurance" is considered a taboo by some people, it is actually a good form of investment because the person is not only paying for investment only but rather, is also paying for a guarantee of funds to be received just in case the individual experiences medical trouble or in worst case scenarios, encounters a sudden death. As scary as it may sound, these are harsh realities of life that all people should be prepared for. And Sun Life Financial has just the right products and services for those particular needs.
Financial Advisers do not have it easy. Just like any other professional, they also have to take an exam and pass a lot of exams in order to obtain a license for them to become full fledged Financial Advisers. So it is a guarantee that these Financial Advisers are really equipped with the proper knowledge and skills in handling customers and they truly know the products that they are selling. With Sun Life Financial, the company makes sure that their Financial Advisers are well taken cared of and given the proper training as well. During instances when the Financial Adviser cannot handle a client alone, a JFW or a Joint Field Work is done together with the manager or a Financial Adviser buddy to lessen the intimidation and more chances to win the client over.
Here are other good things about being a Financial Adviser:
- They get to meet new people and broaden their connections
- The seminars and training that the Financial Advisers get come in handy not only during work but can be applied in everyday situations.
- There is no age bracket to become a Financial Adviser. Yes, there is no age discrimination.
- Financial Advisers also get health insurance just like any other employee.
- Financial Advisers' working time is not the usual 8 to 5 type of job. They can choose what time they do their work and also at their own pace. (Work-Life Balance)
- The products that they sell are top-notch so selling the financial products of Sun Life Financial will not be a problem.

After the forum, I have learned that being a Financial Adviser is not a walk in the park. The job, just like that of others, still requires skill and loads of training and confidence. But one thing is for sure, Financial Advisers are there to help the people and bringing them to the right direction of investment. As for the perks, Financial Advisers hold their own time. They get to spend more time with their family and do not limit their world to four corners of the office. Now that's something to be proud of.
